English Composition for Primary School with Examples

Primary 4 English - Comprehension Passage Sample 1

The first thing that came to our minds was safety as we knew there were wild animals lurking around. Jill tried hard to climb up a tree to spot signs of human life. Unfortunately, she could not make it and gave up. In fact, we were certain that we would not be rescued.

I could not remember when we had last eaten but I felt like a ravenous wolf. I knew we had to eat soon to last the journey. Fortunately, I chanced upon a large leaf shaped like a cup with some rainwater trapped in it. We instantly quenched our thirst. Soon after, Jill found some juicy mangoes. A meal had never tasted that good to me before.

The jungle was most terrifying at night. On top of the fatigue and misery, we both feared for our lives. “We should never have left the campsite alone,” I thought as, I hung my head in remorse. I felt as though a wild animal might appear any moment and devour us. In fact, I did hear a low growl. Suddenly, a sharp screech made my blood curdle. It turned out to be a tiny creature with its sharp ears sticking out. Interestingly, it was hanging upside down, just as how our lives seemed at that time.

Primary 4 English - Comprehension Passage Sample 2

Ari’s mother had asked him to gather firewood for the fire. Instead of doing the chore right away, Ari thought he could play with his friends, Mitch and Joe, first.

Not long after, his mother began to wonder why he had not returned. It was already dark and she was worried. At the same time, Ari realised that he had not done as she had asked and told his friends about this. The boys then began gathering the firewood.

Meanwhile, Ari's mother came looking for him. She soon heard the boys' voices. She had mixed feelings. She was happy to know that he was safe but annoyed at the same time because Ari had disobeyed her. She decided to teach the boys a lesson.

She hid in the nearby bushes. Then she picked up a twig and threw it. It hit the ground making a sharp noise. It caught the boys' attention. They stopped what they were doing and looked at one another. She threw another twig in the opposite direction. The boys jumped. The mother moaned in a low voice, "Listen to your mother!" Terrified, the boys dropped everything and scuttled home. Ari's mother could not stop laughing.

After picking up some pieces of firewood, she headed home, where she found Ari in tears.

"Mother, Mother, I'm sorry I didn't listen to you," he sobbed. His mother held him with love. She knew he was truly sorry and would not repeat his mistake.
